On Hilbert's 17th problem
Sur le 17ème problème de Hilbert
Résumé
Hilbert's 17th problem can be stated in the following form:
Let f(X1,...,Xn) ∈ R(X1,...,Xn) such that ∀(x1,...,xn) ∈ R^n, f(x1,...,xn) >= 0.
Can f still be written as a finite sum of squares of rational fractions?
f = Σ_i=1^p gi^2, gi ∈ R(X1,...,Xn)?
And, if the problem has a solution, how many squares for a given number of variables
variables, n, are needed to express any definite rational fraction of R(X1,...,Xn)?
The same problem can also be posed for rational fractions with coefficients in Q or other fields, and we can see if solutions are possible. This is the qualitative point of view adopted in Part 1, and then, if any solutions are found, find out how many squares are needed to decompose them. This is the quantitative point of view adopted in Part 2.
Finally, in Part 3, we'll look at a slightly different problem, since the function field under consideration will no longer be the field of rational fractions with coefficients in a given field, but R(V), the field of fractions of the ring R[v] quotient of R[X1, ..., Xn] by the ideal J(V) of the irreducible real algebraic variety V.
Soit f(X1,...,Xn) ∈ R(X1,...,Xn) telle que ∀(x1,...,xn) ∈ R^n, f(x1,...,xn) >= 0.
f = Σ_i=1^p gi^2, gi ∈ R(X1,...,Xn) ?
