Abstract

Over the last 10 years, there has been an important increase in the number of computer-based functions embedded in vehicles. Development processes, techniques, and tools have changed to accommodate that evolution. Generally, these embedded functions are not stand-alone and need to exchange information – and sometimes with stringent time constraints - with other functions. On the one hand, the set of cooperating functions is deployed onto a complex real-time distributed architecture and on the other hand, an automotive embedded system is the result of a complex collaborative design process. Furthermore, as for the avionics industry, the design of automotive embedded systems is nowadays driven by three main features: cost, performance and safety. In the last ten years, several industry-wide projects have been undertaken in that direction (AEE , EAST, AUTOSAR, OSEK/VDX, etc.) and significant results have already been achieved (e.g., standard components such as operating systems, networks and middleware, “good practices”, etc). In a near future the in-vehicle embedded functions that are safety critical ones will have to be compliant to the emerging ISO 26262 standard, dedicated to functional safety. One of the main challenges for the automotive industry is therefore to come up with methods and tools to more easily develop and integrate the different electronic subsystems. The purpose of this talk is to show how these standards will strongly impact the development of in-vehicle embedded electric/electronic systems.
