Cooperation of frequency and time-domain methods for pitch tracking

Yves Laprie

Abstract

There is no single pitch determination algorithm which yields reliable results for all speech recording and/or producing conditions. The spectral comb method of Ph. Martin, based on spectral harmonic analysis of speech has been previously implemented and has been substantially improved thanks to frequency oversampling, which enables a fine harmonic localization. Primary results exhibit the good robustness of this pitch algorithm. However, in numerous voiced stops and voiced friction segments, this method fails, because there is only one detectable harmonic. On the contrary, a temporal method like AMDF provides good results in such cases, where the periodic structure of the signal is well defined. In this paper, we describe a framework for the cooperation between the previous comb method and a temporal one (AMDF) through the dynamic programming post-processing of H. Ney.
