Setting up the Student's Computing Environment to Access a Web Educational Delivery System
Abstract
This research takes place in the context of the French-speaking Virtual Medical University (UMVF) project, in which we are in charge of the specification of the "student's desk", i.e. the student's computing environment and its localisation. The medicine-educational-process may occur in different places: at the university, in a hospital, at home or in an office. At home, the student needs to adapt his environment to be able to received and view every educational resources supplied by the WEDS (Web-Based Education Delivery Systems). In the setup-stage, he needs some help, according to his computing level. Therefore we provide him with a setup-program. This program results of the specification of services related to the management of the computing environment. We specify a reference-frame, which describe pieces of software and hardware required in the computing environment, to be able to function correctly. We point out services: set-up services, reference-frame services and test services. WEDS-design should include new categories of users. Thus we specify: the setup-users (site administrators or student), the testers and reference-frame managers. And we extend the setup-user's profile. We choose UML for modelling the setup-system and the setup-user.
