An active forcing strategy to reduce the log-layer mismatch in continuous hybrid RANS-LES

Continuous hybrid RANS/LES methods (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes/ Large-Eddy Simulation), denoted here as HRL, which are promising for industrial applications, still suffer from certain limitations and are subject to extensive research. The switch from RANS to LES is prescribed by a continuous function that reduces the turbulent viscosity, leading to the development of resolved motion, ideally, sufficiently quickly such that the total turbulent stresses (modelled + resolved) are conserved. However, the development of unsteady motion only due to flow instabilities is often too slow which leads to a large deficit in the total mechanical energy and total stresses, which is at the origin of both the modelled stress depletion and loglayer mismatch issues. Recently, Mehta et al. [An active hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-stokes/large eddy simulation approach for grey area mitigation, Physics of Fluids 35 (2023)] showed that the modelled stress depletion problem can be corrected by introducing a model for the commutation term related to material derivatives, based on active forcing in the momentum equation. In the present work, it is shown that this approach also corrects the log-layer mismatch provided that the commutation terms generated by the diffusion operator are also taken into account. The results show that by correctly controlling the intensity of the forcing, it is possible to properly correct the velocity profiles for different Reynolds numbers, and that this forcing naturally adapts to the mesh. The proposed active methodology can be applied to any continuous HRL model where a function driving the switch between RANS and LES can be identified.
