Making learners aware of the prosody of a foreign language
Résumé
The work presented here aims at making learners aware of the prosody of a foreign language. Learners are not conscious of the prosody of the foreign language and use prosodic schemes of their mother language instead. To help them, speech signal analysis tools are provided. Then the realization of a learner is com-pared to a model. This comparison enables us to set up several strategies to make the learning easier. In particular, the visualization of the prosodic cues of the two realizations, the modifications of the prosodic cues of the learner and the localization of the deviations help the learners to assimilate the prosody of the foreign language. To evaluate automatically the deviations, two applications were developed: - the automatic localization of the word lexical accent accompanied by a diagnosis on its realization; - an automatic auditory correction of the learners' realization. This work exploits a corpus especially designed by English teachers to fit the needs of learners on each domain of prosody.
