Case marking on heads and at edges

Abstract

This paper reviews the standard HPSG treatment of case as a head feature, and proposes an analysis of case in phrase-marking languages that relies on the notion of "edge" features. The paper then turns to strict head-final languages, where the simpler head feature analysis is sufficient for most constructions. Data involving coordinated structures, however, suggests that in general the edge feature mechanism is required.
