Abstract

The IEEE 802.11 MAC layer is known for its unfairness behavior in ad-hoc networks. Introducing fairness in the 802.11 MAC protocol may lead to a loss of the global throughput. Many solutions are proposed in the litterature to solve the fairness issues of 802.11 but these solutions only solve some specific problems. Our MadMac protocol deals with both global throughput and fairness and maximizes throughput when unfairness is solved. Fairness provided by MadMac is only based on information provided by the 802.11 MAC layer and its behavior is not probabilistic. MadMac has been tested in all configurations that are known to induce fairness issues. In most of these configurations, MadMac provides the maximum aggregated throughput that can be reached when a fairness scheme is adopted.
