User Centered Design of an IRS

Abstract

Through our experiments in the design and test of some IR systems, (IOTA, RIME, PRIME, ELEN), we are now convinced that the user interface plays an important role in the effectiveness of an IRS. For this reason, we are going toward the design of dedicated IR interfaces for both indexation and retrieval part. As example the system PRIME (presented in MIRO) was one attempt to take into account the user and the interface in the IR design process. In the IOTA system, a rule based reformulation system what an attempt to adapt the functional IR core and the results to the user's profile. We are now going toward the definition of an embeded IR system that combines one or more IR functional core, and user adapted interfaces. One of the key point of this approach will be the test of such a system. That's why we propose a particular design method that enables the building of a flexible system to test easily the parameters that are relevant for the effectiveness of the system. We will also present our preliminary classification of information need that will guide us in the design of the interface. We will conclude on then present experimental system TIAPRI running on nextstep system.
