A Management Framework for Coverage in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

Résumé

The increasing interest in providing infrastructure-less wireless networks based on ad-hoc networking raises new challenges towards providing them the required quality of service. While standard QoS metrics apply gracefully to fixed infrastructures, new metrics need to be considered in the management of ad-hoc networks. We propose in this paper a new QoS metric taking into account the possible average coverage in an ad-hoc network. This metric corresponds to the average number of nodes that a node can reach in the network. We describe a management architecture capable to monitor this metric together with the network density. Our framework can dynamically configure the routing protocol to assure that the QoS level is optimal i.e. to maximize the number of reachable nodes in the network.
