Carries Stripped to the Bone: Episodes in the History of Coaxial Modular Digital Counters

Abstract

This article describes three early mechanical counters which have a number of common features, namely to be modular, coaxial and digital. The earliest of these counters was patented in 1844, and such counters were integral parts of mechanical calculating machines.
