The Science of Linguistics
Résumé
No description of any language encompasses both its grammar and its lexicon. There are simply too many facts. Beginning from the 1960s, in order to address the problem, the French linguist Maurice Gross refined distributional analysis, which had been introduced by American structural linguists. Gross and his followers stressed formal procedures of empirical observation and systematic lexical studies. Generative grammar rejects, and corpus linguistics overlooks, both methodological elements, which provide a sound basis for realistic descriptive methods leading to reliable results.
