Radiative transfer equation for predicting light propagation in biological media: comparison of a modified finite volume method, the Monte Carlo technique, and an exact analytical solution

Résumé

The use of visible or NIR (Near Infrared) light provides many possibilities, particularly for applications in biomedical treatment and diagnosis, such as optical tomography, laser surgery, and photodynamic therapy. To develop an efficient tool, it is essential to have high order accuracy models for predicting light propagation within inhomogeneous, absorbing and highly forward scattering media, typical for biological tissues. Modelling of light propagation through biological tissues has traditionally been done with the Diffusion Approximation (DA) or the statistical Monte Carlo (MC) method.
