Proceedings of the Seventh International Symposium on Computational Aesthetics in Graphics, Visualization, and Imaging (CAe 2011, August 5--7, 2011, Vancouver, Canada)

Résumé

We would like to welcome all of you to the Seventh Annual Symposium on Computational Aesthetics in Graphics, Visualization, and Imaging (CAe). In addition to being colocated with ACM SIGGRAPH 2011, this year represents a milestone in collaboration. For the first time, CAe is being held as a joint together with the International ACM Symposium on Non-Photorealistic Animation and Rendering (NPAR) and the Eurographics Symposium on Sketch- Based Interfaces and Modeling (SBIM). This not only increases the audience and contributors, but allows for more effective cross-fertilization with researchers who have similar ideas, but rather different goals or methods. Computational Aesthetics core goal remains the bridging of the analytic and synthetic. This is achieved by integrating aspects of computer science, philosophy, psychology, and the fine, applied & performing arts. It seeks to facilitate both the analysis and the augmentation of creative behaviors. CAe also investigates the creation of tools that can enhance the expressive power of the fine and applied arts and furthers our understanding of aesthetic evaluation, perception and meaning. The symposium brings together individuals with technical experience of developing computer based tools to solve aesthetic problems and people with artistic/ design backgrounds who use these new tools. This year CAe received 39 submissions in total, 24 submissions in the technical papers track and 15 submissions in the art papers track. Due to the limited space in the joint symposium, we were only able to accepted 10 of the technical papers, resulting in an acceptance rate of roughly 42%. The technical submissions were distributed to an international program committee comprising 31 experts, resulting in at least 3 reviews for each paper. All of the accepted papers demonstrated both computational and aesthetic contributions.
