P2P Live Seeding: Efficiency of Seeders in P2P Live Streaming

Fabien Mathieu

Résumé

Seeders (peers that do not request anything but contribute to the system) are a powerful concept in P2P. They allow to leverage the capacities of a P2P system. Although the idea of seeding seems natural for filesharing or video-on-demand applications, using seeders for live streaming is not intuitive. This paper aims at describing the feasibility of P2P live seeding and the corresponding theoretical performance. We propose to start from a simple model that we refine in order to make it more realistic. For ideal systems, with unlimited and costless connectivity, we show that the cost of seeding is marginal. We then extend the results to the case of systems with limited connectivity, and lastly, by considering a linear overhead cost, we give a closed formula that describes the efficiency of seeders in a realistic model.
