XML-Based Content Management Framework for Digital Museum

Résumé

A digital library (DL) focuses on conserving, cataloguing, accessing, and tracking the usage of digitised material. On the other hand, a digital museum (DM), other than being a simple digital archive, indeed emphasizes more on providing users with highly educational and motivating exhibitions. To efficiently transform the organized media objects deposited in the digital archive into educational experiences, there is a need of a novel content management framework for organizing digital collections and for quickly selecting, integrating, and composing objects from the collection to produce exhibitions of different presentation styles. Three years ago, the Digital Museum Group of National Chi Nan University (NCNU) initiated digital museum research and has successfully constructed the Butterfly Digital Museum and the Lanyu Digital Museum. In these two projects, issues regarding XML-based DM data organization framework and multiple-presentation DM content management framework have been proposed. A DM content management proto-type system was implemented. Both projects apply XML technologies and vast amount of XML documents have been accumulated. At the same time, research groups in INRIA (i.e. Language and Dialog Project, LORIA INRIA Lorraine and Opera Project, INRIA Rhône-Alpes) have also devoted much effort on the investigation of fundamentals issues of XML data management and architecture. The ELAN project developed a general XML-based distributed software architecture for accessing and sharing natural language resources in an opened client/server environment. The Opera project has conducted years of research regarding the synchronized hypermedia document modelling. The research results in these two projects in INRIA are indeed valuable for the further improvement of the NCNU XML-based digital museum content management framework. This paper presents the expected results of our future collaboration. Our main goal is to incorporate the NCNU and INRIA research effort for developing novel XML-based hypermedia digital museum content management framework.
