Prepositional Attachment in french Noun Phrases & Reference Resolution
Abstract
The idea that reference resolution needs the contribution of strictly linguistic criteria arises from various studies about reference, namely Pertinence Theory. Among these criteria, the desambiguisation of prepositional attachment in complex nominal phrases (NPs) is an important issue for the construction of the semantic contexte of referential expressions in French. In this article, we show that the knowledge of predicative action nouns occurring in it facilitates the determination of prepositional attachment with thematic roles and types of referents.
