Assisting sense making for cultural heritage – Collaborative tagging of stained glass windows

Résumé

In this poster we focus the corpus of more than 500 stained glass windows (of all churches of the Aube department, in Champagne / France). This very rich patrimony was documented (by the Aube departmental Archive Service, partner in the project) with many resources (photos, historical and administrative documents, experts’ analyses …). In this exploratory project (in progress) we apply computerized method and tools (Steatite, Lasuli) that we developed in our laboratory. These tools use the Hypertopic protocol (http:// hypertopic.org) to allow multi-viewpoints collaborative tagging of stained windows. To observe how sense can be built by experts from their multiple viewpoints, we first organized a short practical workshop, mainly with archives specialists and historians, to demonstrate the proposed method and Web tools on the whole stained glass windows collection. Their experience with these tools illustrates what means « build sense online » starting from digital archives document, contrasted with the approach proposed by Semantic Web advocates. What makes sense for experts (eg. Art or Religion historians, stained glass craftsmen…), but also for tourists or citizens, is very far from what is proposed / argued by Semantic Web technology and ideology. On the contrary of the Semantic Web, multi-viewpoints approach shows the feasibility of a semiotic Web (and even a hermeneutic Web), more ambitious but paradoxically simpler to implement (because resting on human intelligence) and to apply. Semiotic approach is also closer from the tradition of historic and archivistic sciences. Additionnaly this approach leads to more convenient solutions, better matching users’ expectations.
