A theoretical study of a simplified air-sea coupling problem including turbulent parameterizations

Abstract

In this paper we study a simplified mathematical model representative of air-sea coupling. This model incorporates parameterizations of the turbulent boundary layers as used in realistic models. We show that even if simple equations like the one-dimensional stationary heat equation are considered the presence of parameterizations renders the problem extremly complex to study and the unicity of solutions is no longer guaranteed. We motivate and describe a coupling algorithm which ensures that a unique physically sound solution is obtained.
